Victoria teachers strike to go ahead Teachers in the Australian state of Victoria are to go on strike over pay, it has been announced.
Over 90 per cent of teachers in the Victorian Education Union voted in favour of taking the action, with the first stoppage due to take place as students are sitting their VCE exams next Wednesday.
A pay increase of 3.25 per cent has been rejected amid demands by the union for a 30 per cent rise spread over three years.
Union president Mary Bluett said the state government would have to reconsider its offer, saying: "This ballot sends a very strong message that they have got to get more serious."
Victoria's government has faced similar claims from police and health workers in the state, which it has said would add billions to its budget requirements were all the pay claims to be met.
