McDonalds scrapping youth rates
Fast food multinational McDonalds has announced it is to scrap youth rates of pay for its employees in New Zealand.

At present the company pays a lower rate to 16 and 17-year-olds than older employees, but from March 2008 all employees who have worked for 200 hours or been in the job for three months will get the full rate, irrespective of age, TVNZ reports.

McDonalds is bringing about the change in line with a new employment law being passed in the New Zealand parliament.

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions claimed in a statement that the new arrangement was the result of the Unite union's SuperSizeMyPay campaign.

Should the firm decide to repeat the measure in Britain, it would mean workers on the lower minimum wage rates for those aged under 22 being paid the same as those over 22.

In related news, McDonalds has announced an 8.1 per cent rise in same-store sales worldwide in August.
