Auckland dockers to strike over pay
Dock workers in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, will begin a two-day strike tomorrow in a pay dispute with Ports of Auckland (POA).

POA has reportedly offered workers a 3.25 per cent pay rise, but this has been turned down, with the Maritime Union seeking a rise of between 4.5 and 4.9 per cent, plus the additional employee reward of an extra week of holiday, NZ City reports.

According to POA, the union has been arguing for even higher increases, between ten and 15 per cent, a figure it describes as "just unaffordable", reports the National Business review.

Jens Madsen, managing director of POA, told the paper that during the course of the negotiations the company had made "many fair and reasonable proposals".

The strike was "very regrettable", he said.

Around 250 members of the union will take part in the strike.
